The Westmoreland Heritage Trail connects the communities of Trafford, Murrysville, Export, then Delmont, Slickville and Saltsburg. Future plans to connect both sections are in the planning stages. People enjoy the beauty of the WHT every day. During the pandemic, the trail had been an important resource for fresh air and exercise to help keep us healthy and strong. All registration fees and donations from our community festival will go toward trail maintenance and development.
This year for our third annual Festival, we have added a Poker Run to our community festival. Each participant will stop at one or more of five check points along the Westmoreland Heritage Trail and choose a playing card from the deck. At the end of the event each participant will have a complete poker hand. The best hands will receive a prize.
What else will you be able to do at B-Y Park during the Community Festival?
- Basket raffles
- DJ and music
- Community businesses freebies
- Demos by non-profit groups
- Treats for your furry friends
- Fishing for the kids
- Food vendors, ice cream, and beer

The Westmoreland Heritage Trail is a scenic bicycle and walking trail covering 8.5 miles from Saltsburg to Delmont and 9.3 miles from Export to Trafford. Future expansion is in progress to connect the two sections to complete the goal of a 22 mile long trail from Saltsburg to Trafford and extend four miles to connect to the Great Allegheny Passage. The trail is ideal for walking, jogging, bicycling, and cross-country skiing. It has a wide and flat handicapped accessible surface and will accommodate everyone regardless of age or physical ability. There are a few parks located just off the trail along the sections, including Duff Park behind the Robert’s Parcel trailhead, BY Park near the Trafford trailhead, and Saltsburg Park near the Saltsburg trailhead. The Heritage corridor includes historic community centers in Saltsburg, Slickville, Export, South Murrysville, and Trafford, which grew from local industries in salt mining, coal mining, natural gas extraction, and the manufacture of electrical generation equipment.
Who Is the WHTC?
The Westmoreland Heritage Trail Chapter (WHTC) is a volunteer organization associated with the Regional Trail Corporation.
The Regional Trail Corporation is a non-profit entity within Westmoreland, Fayette, and Allegheny Counties, which promotes the conversion of abandoned railroad corridors to recreational trails.
The Westmoreland Heritage Trail Chapter is led by a twenty one member board of volunteers, including government officials and community members from the municipalities through which the trail passes: Loyalhanna Township, Salem Township, Delmont, Export, Murrysville, Penn Township, Monroeville, and Trafford Boroughs. The board has representatives from Westmoreland County, Westmoreland Conservation District, and the Conemaugh Valley Conservancy. We are a growing organization of people like you. We are working to build the trail across northern Westmoreland County as well as assisting other organizations to preserve the historic and community resources along the trail corridor.
Take a look at our Major 2022 Accomplishments. We couldn’t have achieved any of these if it wasn’t for our Chapter Members and Trail Enthusiasts. Thank you for another fantastic year!
